Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle has four distinct phases, each playing a crucial role in fertility:

1. Menstrual Phase (Days 1-5)

Your period begins. The uterine lining sheds, and hormone levels are at their lowest. This marks the start of a new cycle.

2. Follicular Phase (Days 1-13)

Overlaps with menstruation. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) prompts follicles to develop in your ovaries. One becomes dominant and prepares to release an egg.

3. Ovulation (Day 14)

The dominant follicle releases a mature egg. This is your most fertile time. The egg survives 12-24 hours, but sperm can live 3-5 days, creating a 5-6 day fertile window.

4. Luteal Phase (Days 15-28)

After ovulation, the empty follicle becomes the corpus luteum, producing progesterone to prepare the uterus for pregnancy. If no pregnancy occurs, hormone levels drop and menstruation begins.

Maximizing Your Chances of Conception

  • Time intercourse strategically: The 2-3 days before ovulation have the highest pregnancy rates
  • Track fertility signs: Cervical mucus becomes clear and stretchy during fertile days
  • Consider basal body temperature: Slight temperature rise confirms ovulation has occurred
  • Don't stress about perfect timing: Regular intercourse every 2-3 days covers your fertile window
  • Maintain healthy habits: Balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management support fertility
